This is the most efficent way for me to work with pFX - your files aren’t extra heavy (cause all the actual information is stored in separate file for each plant), you don’t need to navigate through your scenes to find the plant you’d used before you can render the preview for each stroke - but most importantly - the plants are always in the same location on your hdd. Besides, with polygons you have much better control over stuff, paintFX is really just a preview.

If you’d paint grass/trees/whatever on 100x100m area its gonna kill your pc and propably crash Maya if you had converted that to polys. Use instances/ instancer+emitter/ spPaint3d script to populate. mb file and import them into your actual scene.

Afterwards, export the poly plants (without the pFX stroke) as a. Set up your lightning and shaders, hit save. Paint 3-4 variations of each plant/whatever and then convert them to polys but keep the original strokes in the scene (so that you can modify or randomize them further if needed).
